May Day
The other historic pillar of the Hyack Festival is the annual May Day ceremony. Started in 1870, it is the longest continuing celebration of its kind in the Commonwealth. Hundreds of boys and girls from New Westminster schools still join in the swirl of the ribbons around the Maypole, learn the intricate steps of the folk dance, or wonder if they will one day be lucky enough to be chosen to represent their school as May Queen or Royal Knight.
